Apple released the first beta version of iOS 12 for users who signed up for the Apple development program.
The new iOS 12 for iPhone and iPad was presented at WWDC 2018. The first beta versions are reserved for registered developers only.
There are tons of new features in iOS 12, including major performance improvements, Siri enhancements, a new Shortcuts app to automate activities on iOS, new features for the Photos app, new features to ease notification congestion, and tools for better control and understand the use of the devices among other features and enhancements.
Developers who have signed up for the iOS developer beta testing program on their compatible iPhone or iPad devices can now download the software update using the Over The Air mechanism in the iOS Settings app. Of course, you will also need one of the iOS 12 compatible devices.
- and sign in with a developer account
- Go to the iOS section of the website and download the iOS 12 Developer Beta Profile
- The Beta 1 download for iOS 12 developers can be found in the Device Configuration Software Update section
Anyone can technically purchase an Apple developer account to access developer beta versions of system software. However, it is highly recommended unless you are a developer.
If you don’t currently have a Beta Developer Profile installed on your iOS device, you can download it directly from Apple from the iOS Developer Center.
The developer beta system software is known to be unreliable. As such, most users are not recommended to download or install them on their devices, even if they can technically access the iOS 12 Beta 1 download through a friend who is a developer.
Always back up a device before installing system software, especially before installing beta system software. Failure to do so could result in permanent data loss.
Currently, only developers have access to the iOS 12 beta, and a public beta of iOS 12 is expected to be available in the coming months.
Additionally, Apple has released beta versions of macOS Mojave Beta 1 as well as tvOS 12 and watchOS 5, each of which can be downloaded from the Apple Development Center for users who are registered in the developer programs.
The final version of iOS 12 is expected to be released this fall along with the final version of macOS Mojave.
