Apple has changed the way an iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are forcibly restarted. Now the device relies on a series of three keystrokes to complete the full reboot.

If you’ve tried force restarting an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus without success, all of the above methods to restart an iPhone will no longer work with iPhone 8 models. The new approach to a forced restart or a hard restart – sometimes this is called a force restart. This is relatively easy once you learn how it works on new devices.

How to Force Restart iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

Forcing iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus to restart is now a three-step process that uses three different buttons in the correct order. The restart takes place as follows:

  1. Briefly press the volume up button
  2. Briefly press the volume down button
  3. Now swipe and hold the power button on the side. Press and hold until the Apple logo appears on the screen

Note that forcing the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus to restart now requires using three different hardware buttons on the iPhone and pressing the buttons in the correct order to start the restart process.

Follow the steps to force restart iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 8: Press Volume Up, Volume Down, then press and hold the Power button.

If the hard reset does not start, press the button again in the correct order.

Why Apple changed the forced restart steps on the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 8 is not entirely clear, but it may be related to the new iPhone X model or a future optimization of iOS devices.

Is the new force reset sequence easier or easier to remember? That remains to be seen, but it is a little more complicated than previous methods of force restarting iPhone devices, which can prevent accidental reboot.

A standard reboot of iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus can be done in the usual way by holding down the power button, turning off the device, and then pressing and holding the power button again to turn the iPhone 8 back on. iPad and iPod touch devices have remained the same anyway and basically just switch the device off and on again.
