Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
